Kandy


Kandy, the capital of the hill country in Sri Lanka is a major tourist destination. The city lies in the midst of the hills, 465 meters away from sea level, 115 Km from Colombo. Kandy is most famous for the Temple - Tooth of Lord Buddha and was the last loyal capital in ancient Sri Lanka ruled by King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha. (1780 - January 30, 1832). The main attraction of the city goes to the Temple Dalada Maligaya where one of Lord Buddha\\\'s tooth is been kept. Built in the 16th century but improvements and additions was done to this structure until the fall of the Kandy kingdom. Also some ancient temples; Lankatilaka Temple, Gadaladeniya Temple, Embakke Devale, Lankatilaka Vihara, Nalanda Gedige are also located in Kandy. Kandy is also popular for the annual pageant known as Esala Perahera. This takes place in the month of July or August. The tooth relic of Lord Buddha is taken in a grand procession through the streets of the city on a Royal Tusker. The procession includes Nilames, Traditional dancers, Drummers and many other traditional performers. The most fascinating among all this are the Elephants who are dressed in wonderful costumes. Annually a large crowd, not only in Sri Lanka but also from various other countries comes to see the Perahara. The Kandy city is a area where anyone can experience many cultural performances and a place for a good Souvenir, also this is one of the main cities with various hotels.
