Polonnaruwa was a royal capital in the Sinhalese kingdom for almost three centuries. It was the capital from around 993 AD to 1250 AD. The greatest king of Polonnaruwa was Parakramabahu I (1153 –1186 AD). In the late 10th Century the Anuradhapura Capital was shifted to Polonnaruwa mainly because it was a better place to guard against rebellion in the southeast. The time king Parakramabahu ruled Pollonnaruwa it was called the area of the “Golden Reign”. Agriculture developed to its highest peak and Sri Lanka became the “granary of the East”. King Parakramabahu is most famous for creating the bathetic Parakrama samudraya (The sea of Parakrama). Which was a 2500 hectare tank with a capacity of 134 million cubic meters. Also ancient records states that he repaired and built 165 dams, 3910 cannels, 163 major tanks and 2376 minor tanks. The life blood of the Polonnaruwa civilizations was indeed water, The main saying of King Parakramabahu was \"Let not a drop of water that falls on the good earth flow into the sea without serving man\". King Parakramabahu I, was followed by King Nissanka Malla (1187-1196), who of cause bankrupted the Kingdom through his attempts to match his predecessors’ achievements. By the early 13th century, Polonnaruwa was beginning to prove as susceptible to Indian invasion as Anuradhapura, and eventually it was also abandoned and the centre of Sinhalese power shifted to the western side of the island.
